In the estimated 3.8 billion years since it originated on our planet, life has radiated into myriad forms—some freakish and some familiar. By comparing and contrasting the molecular mechanisms of these organisms, Whitehead Institute scientists are gaining insights that could lead to novel therapies that specifically target pathogenic parasites (but not their human hosts), a better grasp of the complex underpinnings of regeneration, and an understanding of the “matrix effect” that may form the foundation of many traditional herbal remedies.
