Today, 50 percent of pharmaceuticals come from trees; the harvesting of those trees contributes significantly to global deforestation. Whitehead Institute researchers are developing new, sustainable approaches for synthesizing nature-inspired therapeutics — combining the ancient wisdom of plant-based medicine with genomics, analytical chemistry, and synthetic biology. Whitehead investigators also use plant-based research to learn how epigenetic dysregulation of gene expression may lead to a host of diseases, including fragile X syndrome and Rett syndrome.

Please partner with researchers such as Mary Gehring and Jing-Ke Weng as they fundamentally advance the field of plant biology — and leverage it to understand and treat human illness.
